The holiday commemoration was born to Muslim power in the Iberian Peninsula. It represents the battle between Moors and Christians during the Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula. Several municipalities are celebrating this holiday season but certainly the most popular are those of Alcoy, Villajoyosa and Orihuela, which is representing a naval battle and a landing on the beach of the resort.
This event brings an international tourist interest and is celebrated between 20 and 24 June of each year in the Alicante city. During these days are “planted” handmade figures spread over all city area. These figures are burned at night of 24 June at twelve o’clock, it’s a “Night of the cream.” Also every day from 20 to 24 June you can attend in the Plaza de los Luceros the famous “mascletas” a unique fireworks display in the Valencia.
It is one of the most important cultural religious holiday. The processions start with the Passion Friday, then there are daily processions from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. The procession is gradiosa Saint Friday, but certainly we must emphasize the Procession del Silencio, on Holy Thursday. Very curious is the procession known as the Devil, unique procession in which the figure of the devil in procession.
