Ramon Martinez, the founder of the restaurant El Granaíno, arrived in Elche in the sixties from Cúllar, Granada province, to mount his first bar by the Calahorra. A visit to the Santa Bárbara Castle is highly recommended. Located atop Mount Benacantil, at a height of 166 meters, it is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, with unbeatable views over the Bay of Alicante and on clear days you can see all the way to Tabarca Island. Such is its importance that during the 20th century it was declared a Monument of Historic and Artistic Importance and a Site of Cultural Interest. Here we can also find one of the most characteristic images of the city, a rock formation resembling a man’s profile on the south western slope, known as the Moor’s Face, which is best viewed from Postiguet Beach. The earliest information about what is now known as the Huerto del Cura (Priest’s Orchard) dates back to 1846 when the owner, Mr. Fenoll de Bonet, sold it to Sir Juan Espuche. At this time the tenant was Andrés Castaño Peral. Some years later, Andrés Castaño bought the orchard and, as the owner, he lived there with his family until his death. The orchard was nothing more than a plot of farming land exclusively dedicated to agriculture. The Archpriest and Insigne Basilica of Santa Maria is the highlight of the temple city of Elche. The parish of St. Mary is closely linked to the Elche community since the birth of the same Christian civilization and with it has shared its vicissitudes of history and its development until today. The Palmeral de Elche is the largest palm grove in Europe. Although its presence dates from prehistoric times, it was in the Arab period when it reached its greatest splendour, as the Muslims laid out the palm trees in the form of orchards and vastly improved their cultivation. The site that can be seen today around the historic quarter of the town has over 200,000 palm trees and is known as the Historic Palm Grove. It was declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO for its role as a testament to its role in the transmission of culture from East to West, and for the survival of an exceptional watering system inherited from the culture of Al-Andalus. Spaces open to visitors today include the Municipal Park (with some singular buildings and fountains with neo-Arabic inspiration), the Huerto del Cura garden (declared a National Artistic Garden), the El Palmeral Museum (located in the Huerto de San Plácido garden), and the Route of El Palmeral (which goes through traditional palm groves.

The Fortress-Castle is a beautiful example of Renaissance military architecture of the 16th century. The Italian engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli planned it in 1553 and Don Bernardino de Cárdenas, Viceroy of Valencia, according to the “Programme for the coastal defense of the Kingdom of Valencia”, paid for its construction. Thanks to its defensive structure, the castle faced Berber pirate attacks that razed the coasts.

Iberian tradition It houses one of Spain's most complete collections of Iberian archaeological items from several sites in the Region of Murcia. The permanent exhibition is made up of a total of 16 rooms, which offer a journey through Prehistory, from the Palaeolithic era until the Bronze Age. Besides numerous examples of Iberian art, special mention should be made of items from El Algar (1900-1400 BC), discovered at various sites in the region. The visit is completed with a temporary exhibition room on archaeology, and educational workshops, open all year round.

The Floridablanca Garden is in one of the city's most typical neighbourhoods. The garden is a result of the romantic style of the 19th century, whose last remaining vestiges are the large ficus specimens that border the central path. The garden is currently an avenue that leads from the entrance nearest to Camachos Square to the statue of José Moñíno, Count of Floridablanca, the work of the Italian S.
